Infusion and Structural Health Monitoring

Embedded optical fibre

Resin infusion is still currently a sensitive process which needs further improvement to make it more reliable for real industrial application. Cure monitoring is needed to better understand this process.

Work within the ADVITAC project will assess improvements in the infusion process and cure monitoring using fibre optic sensors.

  • Design, specification and construction of a fibre optic sensor signal processing unit,
  • Fabrication of tilted fibre Bragg grating (TFBG) infusion sensor elements
  • Development of algorithms and software for data processing/analysis
  • Characterisation of the TFBG infusion sensors
  • Fabrication and characterisation of fibre Bragg gratings in Hi-Bi (High birefringence) fibres for cure
  • monitoring and Structural Health Monitoring
  • Link with Structural Health Monitoring, data synthesis of mechanical tests
  • Investigation of the use of robotic systems for optical fibre sensor placement
  • Investigation of the influence of embedded optical fibre sensor element on structural integrity
  • Investigation of fibre ingress/egress issues
