INASMET-TECNALIA

INASMET-Tecnalia is a Technological Centre (private and non-profit) providing RTD services focused on Advanced Materials and their Manufacturing Processes to institutions and productive industries with the mission of “actively contributing to the social and economical development, promoting and facilitating innovative processes and technological development as a competitiveness strategy”. With an Annual turn-over of 27 M€ INASMET-Tecnalia, has approx. 1350 staff, and 230 permanent staff.

Technical involvement in the proposal

Carbon nanofibres

Inasmet-Tecnalia will develop nanofibre/nanoparticle reinforced composites in order to improve electrical, thermal and flame retardancy properties of the composite structure. The work will use existing knowledge and facilities to improve the conductivity of carbon nanofibres using an in-house electroless coating pilot plant. Carbon nanofibres (CNFs) will be formed into buckypaper sheets and used to selectively enhance the (surface) electrical conductivity of the composite. CNF buckypaper(s) will be incorporated into composite laminate structures by autoclave or integration of dry fibres using an RTM process.

Nano clays will also be investigated to improve the fire retardant properties of the composite structure. Nano particulate clays and traditional FRs will be integrated into the resin system for enhancement of the fire retardant properties of the composite structure in selected locations. The interactions between the nano clays and fibres will be studied.

Previous Experience relevant to these tasks
